The Artist's Brush

This collection not only celebrates the modern greats but also pays homage to each one of them.

Throughout my university education I have been exposed to several artists, not just from around the world but also locally in India. As design explorations continued, there was a great deal of influence in my experiments with graphic design of artists like Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Klee, not only through student years but their contribution to my visual world has been constant till date.

It all started when I was asked to paint a scarf of Miro’s Cats for a Art Collector Adviser. The pressure was on! I had never before attempted to paint any adaptations of painters and their styles. It took me about 2 days to paint the scarf ( almost a week of planning ) and the time and effort were well worth it. Word went around and I had the opportunity to paint another based on Klimt (Water Serpents). This one was by far the most challenging… so I thought at the time… until I decided to choose Vincent Van Gogh for this collection!

When you start to paint adaptations onto a completely different material (silk and not canvas) the process is all about problem solving. How do you achieve the same feel? How do you choose a painting that now has to be draped and worn? A process I came to love as I went on to create this collection.

As you start to paint each one, you begin to wonder how their minds worked, how they perceived what they saw and finally how they communicated that through their distinctly different styles, and invariably you find yourself in the library or an old book store or the internet looking up more of their work, ideologies and history.

I have chosen some of the most well known paintings of the artists featured in this collection so that everyone can relate to them or has at least been exposed to them at some time in their lives.

This collection has been yet another milestone of growth for me.

Hope you enjoy wearing these scarves and ties as much as I enjoyed creating them!
